The largest of the isĀlands is Elba, which rises at its western end to over 1000 metres. Its iron deposits have been exploited since Etr-uscan times, while its rocky coasts - like those of the more southerly island of Giglio - are ideal for underwater fish-ing. We should also mention the craggy island of Monte-cristo, a granite rock now wisely protected as a reserve for flora and fauna, and the islet of Giannutri, with its ru-ined Roman villa.
