Tuscany countryside
Following these, from north to south, are the Magra (65 km.), the Cecina [76 km.), the Cornia (50 km.), the Albegna [67 km.) and the Fiora (71 km.).
There once existed an extensive and intriguing Tuscany of lakes and marshlands. Between Florence, Pistoia and Lucca was the kingdom of the canebrakes, flat-bottomed barges and wildfowl, while the Valdichiana was a vast, shallow lake. The "Loggia del Pesce" which makes a fine, but faintly absurd, display of itself in the middle of CorĀtona - within sight of a Lake Trasimeno that has been ir-reversibly polluted - is a reminder of the times when lake-fish were abundant. The marshes provided Tuscans with their Lenten fare and plenty of game for their feast-days. Of ali this, there is little left today: the lake of Massaciuccoli near Viareggio, with an area of some 7
square kilometers, the small marshes at Bientina and Fucecchio, the lakes of Montepulciano and Chiusi, as well as the coastal lake of Burano south of Orbetello.
