AH the same, the reputation for being "modem" and "dynamic" which Tuscany enjoys (and, let it be said, with ampie justifica-Hon) should not lead us to forget that it is one of the most densely wooded regions in the whole of Italy, and that it can boast a coastline 300 kilometers long.
Woods and sea shores, moreover, subject to decay and exposed to ecological death. From the outskirts of the Megalopolis that now stretches from Florence to Prato and Pistoia, and from Pisa to Livorno, or from the deso­late stretches of the Apennines and the Garfagnana where emigration and the decline of population have created scores of abandoned villages, the traces of the landscape that inspired Benozzo Gozzoli, Leonardo and (later) Fattori are not always very clearly discernible.
